I moved to Highland Park earlier this year and Fig Trees is the latest local business I ventured into during my last neighborhood excursion. Usually when I’m running low on flower I’ll make the fifteen minute drive to my usual shop as I’m generally pretty stuck in my ways, but that is now a thing of the past. Grace, and the other employees at Fig made me feel right at home, which unfortunately is all too rare in an industry that is supposed to be laid back and care-free. Most other shops have a stuffy, almost stand-offish or pretentious vibe, but I felt very welcome during my first visit to Fig Trees. It was like they were welcoming back a regular rather than a first-time customer. Grace was happy to answer my questions and walk me through their offerings and deals, ultimately helping me find a new strain in addition to my tried and true. I’ve noticed bud-tenders often try to push the loudest, heaviest THC content flower onto customers, but when I expressed that I wasn’t looking for comatose-inducing bud, she knew just what I wanted, explaining the merits of the different components in various strains. Another customer was asking for suggestions with edibles, and I think they were equally as impressed as I with the wealth of knowledge provided regarding the different wares. All in all, the shop is rather sparse, but in a clean, no-nonsense kind of way. It showcases what the customer is there for in a way that wouldn’t overwhelm grandma or put off a member of the working class. Fig Trees is an open space bordered by the different products they have for sale, organized by method of ingestion. The employees are welcoming, well-versed in their knowledge, and seemed to intuit the needs of their customers, which is surprisingly rare in the industry. They earned a loyal customer and I couldn’t recommend them enough. You’ll be made to feel right at home regardless of if you’re an occasional toker or a cannabis connoisseur. – Brandon Doughty
