Before I showed up on Saturday I checked the website and it said happy hour was 9-11. I arrived during the 9-11 time. I had a bud tender argue with me that it was now 1-3, but she would give me happy hour pricing anyway. I showed her the website showing 9-11. Just called to confirm coming in at 1-3 today, only find out that the bud tender who claimed San Mateo had changed to 1-3 was mistaken and instead of taking advantage of happy hour I’m just out of luck. There are very few establishments remaining, or opening, that fly so low below my radar—these places being equally as lovely as important—that when I discover them, I have a brief moment of sadness the universe didn’t unite us sooner —Amnesia is that place. Latina and female owned, this dispensary exudes what I’ve been hoping, fantasizing, and dreaming for since receiving my medical patient card after moving here from Utah in 2023. When you walk into the Amnesia on San Mateo, the well-lit room is bright with green accents. It feels fresh, comfortable and, most importantly, safe. The atmosphere could ease the mind of a variety of medical patients, undoubtedly. In recent years, as dispensaries have taken over every block in Albuquerque, the medical patient has been lost along the way. Cannabis, while rooted in healing, is still a booming capitalized good. But does that make it any less medicinal? Especially as I’ve seen companies like Wyld make a killing from their 1,000mg medical edibles—profiting, just as the pharmaceutical companies do, off the ailments of the human condition. But Amnesia is not that; it’s just…. Different. I met the owner, and she was proud of what she has built—I could feel her presence from a mile away. She was also engaged, focused and open to a conversation with me, a medical patient, to make their medical program more helpful and accessible. She didn’t pass the finish line, she moved it. If you miss a time of the upmost quality, not this time of convenience and excess quantity, you should definitely stop by Amnesia. – Eden Buxton
