On the final day of my Vegas trip, I was excited to stop by The Treehouse to pick up my birthday gift. It was the actual day of my birth, March 8th, and I had my ID in hand, clearly showing that date. Instead of celebration, I was told my ID was expired. But here’s the thing, it wasn’t. It expired that day. And just like a coupon at the grocery store can still be used on the day it expires, my identification should have been valid on the date listed. An expiration date means valid through that date. Even after presenting my paper copy of my ID, procured from my home state prior to my departure, I was still denied entry. Rather than being welcomed in on my birthday, I was left standing outside in the cold entrance, confused and honestly embarrassed, waiting while the situation was questioned. It wasn’t until my acquaintance stepped in and asked for clarification that a manager was brought over. Only after speaking with management was I granted entry. After the embarrassment, I returned my payment method to my purse with my ID and the multiple item purchase I was planning on making quickly escaped my mind. What was supposed to be a simple, joyful “birthday gift” moment turned into an uncomfortable experience that didn’t feel necessary. Birthdays are meant to be celebrated, not debated at the door. – Sherri McCoy
